Not Another Brick In The Wall

The culture at (then) Christ College made it inviting for many young boys to join the college after they finished their high school. There was this one particular young boy who couldn’t wait to join the college in the year 1989 after his 10th standard. The little boy joined Christ College in the year 1989 and he remembers his very first day at CHRIST.

The excitement of going to college was amazing. The boy suddenly felt like he had moved on from strict rules that he experienced in his school atmosphere to the new college life and environment, which made him feel like there was a lot more freedom. The senior students used to sit on the side wall in a line starting from the gate to the basketball court, ready to pick on the new joiners. They asked the new joiners to do different things like take the Christ College student oath, etc. They felt that the college was actually getting stricter, there were more rules and there was less freedom. These were the early signs of the transformation and change college would go through!

There were many other highlights for this boy since joining CHRIST. Studying here was clearly one of the highlights in his life. Graduating with a BA in Psychology, Sociology and Economics and then with an MA in Sociology, has definitely served him well. The boy joined CHRIST not knowing how it was going to be, as it was a bit away from his home and he didn’t know anyone. His father had finished his education in Joseph’s and he had insisted repeatedly that he joined St. Joseph’s and not Christ College. But the boy insisted on

joining CHRIST and eventually his father gave in and agreed. This was definitely one of the best decisions that this boy had made.

He didn’t know anyone when he joined the college but by the time he graduated from PUC, BA and MA- he had made a truck load of friends. The college instilled in him a sense of confidence - drawing him out of his shell. It gave him an opportunity to meet new people. He learned interpersonal skills at Christ College and is forever indebted to the institute.

Today, it’s nice to see that some areas of what was formerly part of Dharmaram Campus are now part of CHRIST. The college had one of the biggest libraries back then. Today there are two libraries on campus and I think they still continue to be the best in the city.

CHRIST is not just a college but a university today; and it has become one of the most recognized institutions in Bangalore and has also started to be recognized internationally. I am so proud to be a Christite through and through both as a student who studied here, and now being a part of the staff. It truly feels like I have come full circle in my own experience of CHRIST.
