Nagavali

During the year 2014, the English Department introduced a theme of ‘ Fictional Characters’ for their fest named ‘ Jabberwocky’.Being a Malayali, I decided to take up the role played by the Malayalam actress named Shobana in the movie ‘ Manichithrathazhu’. She had played the character named ‘Nagavali’ opposite Suresh Gopi ( His character was called ‘Nagulan’).. Coincidentally, at that time, Suresh Gopi’s son Gokul Suresh, who was also my childhood friend was studying in Christ University as well. On that day, I dressed up as ‘Nagavali’ and Gokul came to watch the Fest too. We managed to get picture together and posted the same on Facebook. It was captioned “Nagulante makanaya Gokul’ney college’il cherkan vanna Nagavali ” (Translation : Nagulan’s son Gokul, who was brought by Nagavali for a college admission ). Our class also had to come up with a theatre performance which was scheduled to happen at Block 1. The marks for this particular act depended on the number of people and the story of the play. This meant that we needed to come up with posters, flashmobs, personal invitations etc to promote the performance. Being a first year student, I was not sure about information regarding who our principal or Vice Chancellor was. One fine day, I noticed two father walking from Block 2 towards Central Block. I rushed towards them and talked about our play. I personally requested them to come witness our play as well. By the end of the conversation, one of the fathers told me to come see him at his office after I finish with the promotions. He also wished me a great day. I was so happy!

Seeing this, my teacher Mr Felix told that it was not right for me to informally invite them like that. I defended myself saying I saw them approaching us and I felt interested to go invite them. It was when Felix sir told me that I realised something! I had actually invited the Vice Chancellor with an informal conversation. Although I felt very anxious, I still decided to go meet him at his cabin as per request. Much to my surprise, father told me that he was happy to see me approach him directly and students usually find him unapproachable. This is definitely one of my most cherished memories from Christ University.
